6.5 km down the Puketui Valley Road you need to stop at the bridge. To your left is the start of the Golden Hills Battery walk.
Golden Hills Battery walk is very easy, you could push a wheelchair to within 50m of the battery. You walk past a gold mine still being worked, but locked up. Then just minutes way is another old mine which you can walk into, but take a pair of gumboots and a good torch. As you amble along the Golden Hills Battery walk you can also look across the Tairua River to the campground and in places you see the track leading to the water race walk. Just before the Golden Hills Battery there is a old railway track lying on the side of the track, so watch the toes.
