The walk from the Wilderness Reserve car park to the lookout is extremely short, but it is easy to get lost in the views as the mountains and land spread out as far as the eyes can see.
Far enough from any town and with the surrounding low vegetation, you can embrace the entirety of Fiordland National Park. The lookout platform is not really that high and the bushes are starting to block the view a bit, hopefully DOC will trim them down soon.
Though often overlooked, there is another interesting view to take in from the viewing platform. And no, it is not the Takitimu mountains—because no one overlooks mountains. It is the bog pine forest beneath. It is a low-lying shrub that is native to New Zealand. It is a plant that is uncommon and in decline, so this might be most people’s chance to ever see it.
This walk is also wheelchair accessible. While you’re in Te Anau, make sure you take a day trip out to Milford Sound. Or take a once in a lifetime scenic flight over Dusky and Doubtful Sounds. which leaves right from the waterfront in Te Anau.
