From the car park, walk past the gate and onto the 4WD road.
The walk will take you through pine forest plantation and then along the Twizel River. Continue straight where the Gladstone Stream forks off towards the left. After another 4 km, you will reach a junction. Take the left-hand track for Baikie Hut.
Baikie Hut rests on a mostly flat area with a little stream nearby. This is a popular day hike as it is not particularly long. However, the hut does get busy as it is easily accessible. Whether you are spending the night or stopping for a picnic lunch before heading into Aoraki/Mt Cook National park, Baikie Hut is sure not to disappoint.
You might find yourself sharing the road with mountain bikers, 4WD and even horses! The track is suitable for all of these activities, though 4WDs need the landlord’s permission to access the track.
As this track is on private property, it is important to stay on the marked track and to leave gates as they are. Keep your distance from any livestock you may come across.
There is very little shade along this walk, so make sure to have proper equipment for sun/wind protection.
