Signs for this walk start at Moore street.
However, a more popular start is from Caroline Bay. The track follows the Memorial walkway towards the Benvenue Cliffs and the old lighthouse.
Past the Cliffs and the lighthouse, walk along the top of Waimataitai Beach until you reach Richmond Street. Follow the coastline by turning right at Climie Terrace, going over the footbridge to Moore Street. From there, the track has trees to your left and the water to your right as you make your way to the point of the cliffs.
This point is where ancient lava flows from Mt Horrible met the sea. The rocks below were also a popular Maori fishing place and the point a coastal whaling lookout.
The track follows the cliff’s edge inland before turning back towards Pacific Street. Head straight on Westcott Street to rejoin the path you came from, back towards Benvenue Cliffs.
On your way back, detour around Maori Park before heading back to Caroline Bay.
You can also choose to start the walk at Moore Street if you are short on time.
Dashing rocks present a unique geometric shape that is the result of the ancient lava flows, resulting in typical basalt columns.
