The Harataonga loop walk is part of the DOC Harataonga to Okiwi coastal track.
The track starts from the NW corner of the Harataonga Bay campground, follow the signs from the camp kitchen along the driveway to the camp site, crossing a small creek.
The well-formed track starts at a stock gate and climbs gradually thru the lush native forest. After about 15 minutes walking you will reach the loop walk turn off.
Continue along the track until you reach the open path along the cliff edge. There is quite a steep climb and when you reach a post with track arrows on it you will see to the left an informal track out on the peninsula.
This is well worth taking for spectacular views of Harataonga Bay and beyond. Retracing your steps to the main track follow this until you reach a grassy area with a large tree at the top. Once again take the informal track for more great views of Haratonga Bay.
Returning to the main track you descend through the bush then veering left at the fence line the track descends quite steeply to a small gate into the farm paddock. From here you can walk back to the campground of the beach. Hint – not recommended to walk this track wearing Jandals like we did!
