My Day Walking and Exploring Sorrento and Marina Grande

Sorrento, a captivating town perched on the Amalfi Coast cliffs, is full of history, culture, and stunning natural beauty. I spent the day wandering its charming streets and venturing down to the picturesque Marina Grande, the perfect way to experience the essence of this Italian town.

Morning:

  • I began my day in the heart of Sorrento, Piazza Tasso, the main square. Stop and admire the intricate details of the 17th-century Chiesa di San Francesco and soak in the vibrant atmosphere of the cafes and shops.
  • From the piazza, wander through the maze of narrow streets lined with colourful houses and local shops. Don’t miss Corso Italia, the main shopping street, where you can find everything from souvenirs and local crafts to designer boutiques.
  • Make your way to the Duomo, Sorrento’s majestic cathedral. Dating back to the 12th century, the cathedral boasts a beautiful Romanesque bell tower and an ornate interior.
  • Next, head towards the public gardens, Villa Comunale. This tranquil haven offers breathtaking panoramic views of the coastline, Mount Vesuvius, and the Bay of Naples. Relax amidst the lush greenery and enjoy the beautiful views.

Afternoon:

  • After a stroll through the gardens, I continued my walk down towards Marina Grande. Take the scenic route through narrow alleys and steps, enjoying the charming local atmosphere. Alternatively, opt for the elevator located near the gardens for a quicker descent.
  • Upon reaching Marina Grande, the cute harbour is in front of you. Explore the charming waterfront lined with colourful fishing boats and traditional restaurants. I had my lunch here, fresh fish, it was the best. I was seated on a restaurant terrace, taking in the vibrant atmosphere and stunning sea views.
  • If time allows, explore the small beach here, perfect for dipping your toes in the refreshing water or simply relaxing on the volcanic sand.

Returning to Sorrento:

  • After a delightful afternoon in Marina Grande, you can choose to walk back up the scenic route or take the bus from the harbour directly to Piazza Tasso.

This itinerary covers approximately 10 km of walking and can be comfortably completed within 4 hours, allowing you to experience the highlights of Sorrento and Marina Grande at a leisurely pace.

Additional Tips:

  • Wear comfortable shoes suitable for walking on uneven surfaces and cobblestone streets.
  • Bring sunscreen and a hat, especially during the summer months.
  • Pack a light lunch or snacks if you don’t plan to dine in Marina Grande.

Consider purchasing a Sorrento City Pass for discounted entry to major attractions and free public transportation within the city.
