5 walks on a day trip to Urupukapuka Island
I explored Urupukapuka Island’s diverse trail network, with options ranging from leisurely strolls to challenging hikes. For a quick introduction, I meandered along the easy Otehei Loop Tracks, taking in the scenery for 20 minutes to an hour.
Then, the Cable Bay Loop offered easy terrain through pastures in 20 to 40 minutes. Feeling ambitious, I could tackle the Urupukapuka Loop Track, a moderate climb to the island’s high point with panoramic views in 40 minutes to an hour, however I didn’t have time for this walk.
For a steeper challenge, the Paradise Loop Track had stunning coastal vistas within 1 to 1.5 hours. Venturing further afield, I did the Pateke Loop Track which provided a moderate 1.5 to 2 hour walk, while the Cliff Pa Loop rewarded with its dramatic scenery after a 45 to 60 minute climb.
To truly immerse myself in the island’s entirety, I could embark on the ultimate 5-hour archaeological walk, circumnavigating Urupukapuka and encountering historical sites along the way.
How to get to Urupukapuka Island
Reaching this paradise is straightforward by ferry. From Paihia, the main town in the Bay of Islands, ferries depart regularly to Urupukapuka Island, delivering you directly to Otehei Bay, the starting point for all the walking tracks.
About Otehei Bay where the ferry arrives
After my ferry ride to Otehei Bay, I found myself with a range of conveniences at my disposal. To refuel after a hike or quench my thirst, the fully licensed cafe offered a tempting selection of food and drinks. There is plenty of seating with bean bags on the grass which are fun. It can get really busy in the weekends so try an avoid this time.
If you needed to learn more about the island’s fascinating history and ecological restoration efforts, the Education Centre has loads of great info. For those seeking a longer stay, a designated campground provides a place to pitch your tent and experience the island under the stars.
