Auckland Friends of Maungawhau have kept up with planting native trees so that in time, the mountain will have improved heritage protection.
Since our last visit, the work undertaken on the water reservoir has been completed, so we have added an extra optional loop to take in a bigger view of Auckland City and the harbour.

Area and history of Mt Eden
Just 5 km from downtown Auckland it is the highest volcano in Auckland. The last eruption was about 15,000 years ago leaving a crater 50m deep.
Around 1870, farmland was subdivided into small suburban plots. In the 1950s Mt Eden was used by the New Zealand post office for radio communications. There were two buildings on Mt Eden, one building housed transmitting equipment, while the other housed receiving equipment.
In 2017 the road was closed to all vehicles.
