I had a fantastic time walking in New Caledonia
New Caledonia’s walking trails vary in difficulty, so choose one that suits your fitness level and experience. My walks are usually quite short or a few hours long. Always check weather conditions before heading out, wear proper footwear and a sun hat.
Best time to hike in New Caledonia
Deciding the ideal time to walk in New Caledonia depends on your preferences for weather and crowds. I was there in September and October and the weather was perfect. Here’s a breakdown of the seasons:
Dry Season (May to September):
- Pros: Pleasant temperatures (around 20°C to 22°C), lower humidity, less rain, clearer views, perfect for outdoor activities like hiking.
- Cons: Peak tourist season, higher prices, some trails may be closed due to fire risk.
Shoulder Seasons (April and October):
- Pros: Fewer crowds than peak season, comfortable temperatures, still good weather for hiking.
- Cons: Some rain showers possible, some trails may still be closed due to fire risk.
Wet Season (November to March):
- Pros: Lush green landscapes, fewer crowds, lower prices.
- Cons: Hot and humid weather, higher chance of rain and thunderstorms, some trails may be closed due to flooding or landslides.
Recommendation:
- Comfortable temperatures and okay with crowds: Dry season (May to September).
- Budget-friendly and occasional rain is acceptable: Shoulder seasons (April and October).
- Secluded experience and don’t mind hot/humid weather: Wet season (November to March), but check trail closures beforehand.
