Full walk description

The walk begins alongside the Waihi Beach water reservoir. You can choose to complete a short loop around the reservoir which is mostly flat, or take a turnoff towards the Trig Walk.

The Trig Walk itself winds through native bush for part of the way. In the upper sections, the recent removal of pine trees has exposed the path, so be sure to bring sun protection for these areas.

The effort is rewarded with stunning views from the lookout point. You’ll see Waihi Beach stretching out below, along with the views of Mayor Island, Coromandel Peninsula and the vast Bay of Plenty.

Things to remember:

  • Wear sturdy shoes with good grip.
  • Bring water, especially if completing the walk on a warm day.
  • Sun protection is recommended for the exposed sections.
  • Be aware that the recent tree removal may have left the upper part of the trail a bit muddy or uneven underfoot.

Alternative route:

Consider extending your walk by incorporating the Forest Loop. This loop takes approximately 1.5 hours and offers various viewpoints through the regenerating native forest, with some surpassing the elevation of the Trig lookout.
