Bayview Coast and Bush Walk

Today we set out to explore the Bayview area near Glenfield on Auckland’s North Shore. What a wonderful surprise to find a beautiful bush walk, alongside the Upper Harbour reaches, all part of the Glenfield Coastal Walkway.

The walk takes in Manuka Reserve with views of the Upper Harbour, Hobsonville Point and native bush. Not only are there stands of manuka trees (tea trees) beside the estuary, but inland within Leigh Scenic Reserve, there are kauri trees and palms.

NOTE: The Manuka coastal track around to Kaipatiki Rd is currently closed and it looks pretty unused with no skirting the barrier in sight. Instead I did the the walk the other way and up through Leigh which was great. From Maureen.

Difficulty:	Muddy in places when wet. Suitable for users of average fitness and mobility.
Highlights:	Native bush, small waterfalls, views across Auckland Harbour to Hobsonville Point, native birds.
Dog Friendly:	Yes – Dogs on leash
Facilities:	Two childrens playgrounds.

The Hobbiton Movie Set Day Tour - From Auckland

This circular walk is mostly bush with only a small section of street footpaths. It is suitable for families, with two places to stop at playgrounds. Dogs must be kept on leash.

Parts of this track were closed due to Kauri Dieback, but they are all open now.

This project began in 2011. My friend Grace was the walk creator – with her knowledge of Auckland, she could “see” circular routes, and then it was up to me to map out, photograph, research and document the routes. At first, I relied upon my voice recorder and Google maps but then with the advancement of technology, the smart phone became a best friend and I was able to track our route. The best fun was when we were both pleasantly surprised by what there was to see. Beautiful wetlands, views and bush kept us inspired to explore more.
