A great way to start this walk is by visiting Couldrey House itself to get a taste of history from the carefully furnished rooms of the house and gardens.
The start of the walk is at the pouwhenua (carving) near the House.
Walk along the flat dirt track, which winds its way through some trees, before you reach the driveway. The walk continues on the other side of the driveway. You will see yellow markers so you cannot miss where the path starts again. Shortly after crossing over, the path starts to ascend up the hill.
The track up the hill is a zigzag so you don’t have to worry about going straight up. The walk takes you through lush forest which, with the height of the trees, provides much plenty of shade on a hot summer day.
The climb is only 10 minutes or so. It takes you right to the clearing with the lookout. The view is over the beach and estuary. There are also two information panels for those interested in the area’s history.
Midway through this walk you will cross paths with the Puhoi track.
