The Lake Tekapo Peninsula is a popular walk with stunning views of Lake Tekapo and Lake McGregor from a very different angle to what you see from Tekapo township.
From the car park on Godley Peaks Road (just after the Mount John turnoff), walk through the field framed by mountains. You will be following the shoreline the whole way until the end of a peninsula. At the end of the walk, you will see Motuariki Island, the largest island in Lake Tekapo.
As you make your way along the track, make sure to take a look back for a unique view of Mount John.
The track has some hills but they are incredibly easy to walk over. Along the walk, you may encounter sheep because this walk takes you through a sheep farm. As a result, the track is closed for lambing in mid October to mid December. In the summer months, you will also be able to see fields of lupine flowers in full bloom, they are stunning.
This is a loop track, so the way back takes you via Godley Peaks Road. However, many people choose to simply return the way they came in order to continue to enjoy the views of Lake Tekapo and the mountains.
Further along Godley Peaks Road, you will find Lake Alexandrina and Lake McGregor, if you are interested in seeing more stunning lakes.
