It is close enough to central Timaru that it is easy to access, but the track along the coast seems to take you far away. Strong winds and the sound of the crashing waves blocks out the city.
The track runs next to the edge of the beach. You also have the option of simply walking along the beach. From Patiti Point car park, the track hugs the coastline as you make your way in the direction of Timaru Harbour.
The end of the track is at Stuart Street, where you can easily find your way back into Timaru central. You can also retrace your steps to Patiti Point and beyond for a longer walk. A second alternative is continuing along the coastline towards the breakwater protection for the harbour.
Along this walk, you will most likely see fishing boats and other types of ships, as well as surfers.
Keep your eyes peeled for birds such as banded dotterels, South Island pied oystercatcher, and white fronted terns. You may also see penguins on the beach or seals popping their head out of the water.
